Over 30% of the world's energy now comes from renewables, marking a significant shift in global energy production, according to a report by energy think tank Ember. This milestone was achieved in 2023, with wind and solar energy leading the growth. The report, which analyzed data from 80 countries representing 92% of global energy demand, indicates that the decline of fossil fuel power is "inevitable."
The European Union is notably ahead of the global average, generating 44% of its energy from renewables, largely driven by rapid expansions in solar and wind. The EU's progress is attributed to early adoption policies and the urgency to transition from fossil fuels, especially in light of the Ukraine crisis. The European Green Deal and REPowerEU initiatives have played crucial roles in setting ambitious targets and facilitating the adoption of renewable technologies across member states.
