Air travel passengers are increasingly dissatisfied due to factors such as high ticket prices, staffing shortages, reduced routes, and frequent flight delays and cancellations1. These issues have led to a decline in overall airline passenger satisfaction and an increase in complaints filed with the U.S. government.
The Transportation Department received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the year before. This is the highest number of consumer complaints about airlines since 2020.
In 2023, the percentage of flight cancellations in the U.S. was 1.2%, with a total of 116,700 flights canceled out of all scheduled flights. This was an improvement compared to 2022, when the cancellation rate was 2.3%, with around 210,500 flights canceled.
