In 2023, Amazon reported that effectively all of the electricity its operations used came from sources that did not produce greenhouse gas emissions2. The company achieved this through investments in more than 500 solar and wind projects, reaching its goal of 100% clean energy seven years ahead of schedule.

Experts criticize Amazon's clean energy calculation method because it relies on purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) instead of directly powering its operations with renewable energy. This approach can create a misleading impression of the company's impact on the climate, as the solar and wind farms do not directly supply Amazon's operations.

Amazon achieved its 100% clean energy goal in 2023, seven years ahead of its original 2030 target. The company invested billions of dollars in over 500 solar and wind projects across 27 countries, generating enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of 7.6 million U.S. homes.
