The European Union has announced that Apple's iPadOS will need to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), expanding the number of Apple platforms under EU regulation to four. This inclusion requires significant changes to how Apple operates its tablet platform in the EU, including allowing third-party app stores and non-WebKit browsers.
Apple has six months to align iPadOS with DMA requirements, which include non-discriminatory access for app developers and the prohibition of self-preferencing its services. The EU's decision follows an investigation that showed a significant number of business users and a growing number of end users on iPadOS, leading to its designation as a "gatekeeper" despite not initially meeting the user threshold.
