California is offering drivers money to test its alternative to the gas tax

California is exploring a shift from its traditional gas tax to a per-mile fee system, offering drivers up to $400 to participate in a pilot program. This initiative, known as Road Charge, aims to sustainably fund road repairs as the state increases its use of electric and hybrid vehicles. Participants will track their mileage from August until January 2025, make online payments, and complete surveys, with compensation distributed throughout the pilot period.
