The proposed EU tariffs on Chinese EVs could go up to 38.1%, depending on the brand and how much they negotiated with the EU's investigation. These tariffs would come on top of the current rate of 10% levied on all electric cars produced in China.
In the recent tariff negotiations between the EU and China, EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis represented the European Union, while China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao represented China. The talks focused on the planned imposition of tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles being imported into the European market.
The EU considered imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs due to concerns that they were unfairly subsidized by the Chinese government, posing a threat to European EV producers. This followed an anti-subsidy investigation by the European Commission, which led to the decision to provisionally impose import tariffs ranging from 27.4% to 48.1% on Chinese EVs.
