A total of 54,000 generative AI patents were filed up to 2023, according to the United Nations' World Intellectual Property Organization3. China led the surge with the most patents filed, followed by the US, South Korea, Japan, and India.
GenAI patents represent six percent of all AI patents globally. The number of filings is rising fast, with an eightfold increase since 2017. China leads in GenAI patent filings, with the majority of top applicants being Chinese companies such as Tencent, Ping An Insurance, and Baidu.
China filed the most GenAI patents between 2014 and 2023, with over 38,000 innovations, significantly outpacing other countries. The United States was second with 6,276 patents, followed by South Korea with 4,155, and Japan with 3,409.
