Egypt is constructing a new $58 billion capital 30 miles from Cairo to alleviate overcrowding in its current capital, which houses about 22 million people. The new city, yet to be officially named but referred to as the New Administrative Capital, will feature Africa's tallest building and aims to host 6.5 million residents.
The project, announced in 2015, has already seen over 1,500 families relocate. It includes government, business, and residential districts connected to Cairo by an electrified light railway. Critics, however, question the massive expenditure and the project's focus, suggesting it caters primarily to the affluent.
