The FBI is investigating a case involving Jerry and Rita Alter, former New Mexico teachers suspected of stealing valuable artworks, including a $150 million Willem de Kooning painting. The Alters, now deceased, allegedly led a double life as international art thieves, funding extravagant travels through heists. Their involvement came to light after the recovery of the de Kooning painting in 2017. Additional stolen artworks, including pieces from the Harwood Museum in Taos, are still missing, prompting the museum to seek FBI assistance in their recovery.
