The new FDA rule on BVO will take effect on August 2, 2024. This rule revokes the authorization for the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food due to concerns about the chemical's health harms. Companies will have one year after the effective date to reformulate, relabel, and deplete their BVO inventory.
Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) has been linked to several health risks, including nervous system damage, headaches, skin and mucous membrane irritation, fatigue, loss of muscle coordination, and memory problems. Studies have also shown that BVO can accumulate in body tissues and potentially cause harm to the thyroid.
