The U.S. Justice Department has charged Roger Ver, known as "Bitcoin Jesus," with mail fraud and filing false tax returns, alleging he evaded nearly $50 million in taxes. Ver, who renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014 after obtaining citizenship in St. Kitts and Nevis, reportedly failed to pay the required "exit tax" and misrepresented his capital gains and asset values. The indictment claims Ver avoided reporting personal holdings and undervalued 73,000 Bitcoins, leading to a $48 million loss for the IRS. He was recently detained in Spain by U.S. authorities.
