The Ford Escape that had engine failure was a 2014 model. The engine was a turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, and it was found with significant damage, including chunks of piston and rod in the oil pan. The cause of the failure remains a mystery.

The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine is used in a variety of Ford vehicles, including the Ford Escape, Ford Focus ST, Ford Edge, Ford Fusion, Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKZ, Lincoln MKC, and Ford Explorer4. It is also used in some international models such as the Ford Falcon in Australia and the Ford Mondeo and S-Max in the European market.

The Ford Escape covered 164,000 miles before the engine failed. It was pulled from the Escape with that mileage, and the motor was allegedly being driven by someone's daughter who didn't check the oil, eventually leading to the engine not starting and being towed to a shop where it was pronounced dead.
