The eight former SpaceX employees have filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk and the company, alleging sexual harassment and whistleblower retaliation, among other wrongdoings. The specific allegations include creating a hostile and abusive work environment by making unwanted comments and advances of a sexual nature, as well as fostering a pervasively sexist culture at SpaceX. The lawsuit also claims that Musk's inappropriate conduct on Twitter contributed to the hostile work environment, and that the company took no action to prevent or remove such behavior. Additionally, the plaintiffs allege that they were terminated in retaliation for raising concerns about the workplace culture and Musk's behavior.
Elon Musk allegedly responded to the open letter circulated on SpaceX's intranet by asking one of his human-resources representatives to travel from Texas to SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne to "deal with" the authors of the letter. According to the lawsuit filed by the eight former employees, the three chief authors of the letter were terminated on June 16, 2022. SpaceX management then conducted an investigation to identify other key contributors, which led to the firing of the other five plaintiffs over the following two months.
The behavior and comments attributed to Elon Musk reportedly created a hostile and abusive work environment at SpaceX. According to the lawsuit filed by the eight former employees, Musk's off-color posts on Twitter, which often contained sexual innuendos, were circulated and widely discussed within the workplace. It is alleged that Musk was aware that his posts permeated the workplace, and yet no action was taken by management to prevent this or remove the posts. This contributed to a "pervasively sexist culture at SpaceX," where senior engineers referred to mechanical parts with crude and demeaning names, often at the expense of women and LGBTQ individuals. The situation escalated with the circulation of an open letter in June 2022, which criticized Musk's behavior and its negative impact on the company and its workplace culture. Following the distribution of this letter, the eight employees who contributed to it were terminated from their positions at SpaceX.
