Google has announced that its secure entry passkeys have been utilized over a billion times by 400 million accounts. Launched in 2022, these passkeys allow users to log in using biometrics or a pin, enhancing speed and security. The technology is widely adopted by major companies like Amazon and eBay, significantly improving user login times.
In addition to general usage, Google plans to expand passkey access to those at high risk of targeted attacks, such as journalists and campaign workers, through its Advanced Protection Program. This move, particularly timely in an election year, aims to bolster security without the cumbersome need for hardware security keys alone. Google is also enhancing its Cross-Account Protection to secure users across different platforms.
