The current ratio of available jobs to job seekers is 1.2 available jobs for every job seeker, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data. This is the lowest ratio since June 2021. Historically, the job market has been strong during the past couple of years, providing a firm foundation for consumer spending and economic growth. However, the labor market is currently experiencing a cooling period, with job openings decreasing and job growth slowing down4.

The April job openings figure saw a decrease compared to the previous month. In April, there were 8.06 million available jobs posted, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report. This is below the downwardly revised 8.36 million seen in March and marks the lowest number since February 2021.
