LGBTQ representation on TV has declined, with broadcast networks showing a six-year low in LGBTQ characters. This year, out of 454 series regulars, only 39 are LGBTQ, a drop from last year's numbers. Additionally, many LGBTQ-inclusive shows are not returning due to cancellations or series conclusions.
The composition of LGBTQ characters includes 48% men, 47% women, and 5% nonbinary. In terms of orientation, 36% are gay, 25% are lesbian, 24% are bisexual, 10% are queer, and 5.1% are transgender. The decrease in representation is partly due to 36% of these characters not returning in the next period, largely because of series cancellations and endings.
