Recall Triggered by Entrapment Deaths
Medline Industries and the CPSC have recalled two models of adult bed rails after two deaths were reported due to entrapment and asphyxiation risks.
Wide Distribution of Recalled Products
The recalled bed rails were sold through major online retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and CVS, as well as online medical supply stores.
Immediate Consumer Action Advised
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled bed rails immediately and contact Medline for a refund, as well as report any related incidents.
Geographical Scope of Recall
The recall affects approximately 1.5 million units distributed in the U.S. and Canada, highlighting the widespread risk posed by these products.

The specific models of Medline Industries LP's adult portable bed rails included in the recall are MDS6800BA and MDS6800BAH. These two models pose a risk of entrapment and asphyxia because users can become entrapped within the rail or between the rail and mattress when attached to an adult's bed1. The recall impacts about 1.5 million units sold between July 2009 and March 2024.

The recall of the bed rails was prompted by two reported deaths associated with the product. The first death occurred in July 2019 and involved a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa. The second death happened in November 2023 and involved an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina. In both cases, the victims became entrapped within the bed rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress, leading to asphyxiation1.
