Microsoft and Google celebrated World Password Day by promoting their advancements in passkey technology, a more secure alternative to traditional passwords. Microsoft announced that all users, not just commercial subscribers, can now access their accounts using passkeys across various platforms including Windows, Google, and Apple. This move aligns with Microsoft's vision of a password-free world.
Google also highlighted the success of its year-old passkey support, revealing that passkeys have been used over a billion times to authenticate users across more than 400 million Google accounts. Both companies emphasize that passkeys, which utilize a cryptographic key pair system for authentication, offer stronger security by being phishing-resistant and do not require users to remember complex passwords.
