Ammo vending machines are currently installed in grocery stores in Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas. American Rounds, the company behind these machines, plans to expand to other states as well.

The company claims their transactions are secure due to the use of identification scanners and facial recognition software to verify the purchaser's age. The technology is considered as secure, or even more secure, than online sales which may not require proof of age, or retail stores where there is a risk of shoplifting.

Federal law requires a person to be 18 to buy shotgun and rifle ammunition and 21 to buy handgun ammunition. American Rounds' vending machines require a purchaser to be at least 21, verify their age through a driver's license scan, and undergo a facial recognition scan for identity verification.
