MIT unveils silk fabric that quiets noisy environments

Researchers at MIT have developed a groundbreaking silk fabric that can suppress noise, potentially revolutionizing how we manage acoustics in noisy environments. By using a special fiber that vibrates when voltage is applied, the fabric can cancel out unwanted noise through interference, similar to noise-canceling headphones, but applicable to larger spaces like rooms or vehicles.

The fabric also employs a technique where it remains still, preventing the transmission of sound through vibration suppression, which can reduce sound transmission by up to 75%. This innovation could lead to practical applications such as creating quieter office spaces or home environments without the need for bulky soundproofing materials. The study was published in the journal Advanced Materials.
