The CDC and FDA have indicated that the number of people affected by the E. coli outbreak linked to walnuts from Gibson Farms, Inc. is likely far greater than the 12 confirmed cases in Washington and California. This outbreak, which has led to serious conditions like hemolytic uremic syndrome in some patients, is believed to be underreported by as much as 20 times. The contaminated walnuts were distributed across 19 states in various natural food stores.
