An estimated 6,500 workers initially walked off the job for a planned three-day strike, and the Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union decided to extend the strike indefinitely. The union represents 28,000 workers, or a fifth of Samsung's global workforce.

The extension of the Samsung strike was triggered by the company's lack of response to the union's demands during the initial three-day strike. The Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union decided to go on an indefinite strike after "hearing no word" from the company, according to Lee Hyun Kuk, the vice president of the union.

The union represents 28,000 workers, which is roughly one-fifth or 20% of Samsung Electronics' global workforce.
