The 2024 Met Gala "Garden of Time" Theme and Dress Code, Explained

The 2024 Met Gala, set for May 6 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, will showcase the theme "The Garden of Time," inspired by J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story. This year, the event will be co-hosted by Anna Wintour, Bad Bunny, Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, and Chris Hemsworth. Attendees are expected to don nature-inspired designs, aligning with the theme which emphasizes the emotional poetics of fashion and the Earth's elements: Land, Sea, and Sky.

The theme ties into the Costume Institute's new exhibition, "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," focusing on garments too delicate to wear, termed "sleeping beauties." The exhibition, running from May 10 through September 2, will feature around 250 items, exploring 400 years of fashion history with sensory experiences like smelling hats and touching embroidered walls. This immersive exhibit aims to reconnect visitors with the vibrancy and dynamism of historical fashion pieces through advanced sensory technologies.
