The space junk crashed into the Otero family's home on March 8.
The metal object that crashed through a Florida home was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal. It was jettisoned from the International Space Station in 2021 and was expected to burn up entirely upon entering Earth's atmosphere. However, one piece survived and landed on the property.
The space debris, a 1.6lb cylindrical metal object, tore through the Otero family's house in Naples, Florida, causing significant damage. It penetrated the roof and ceiling of an unoccupied second-floor bedroom, hit the floor between the bed and a bathroom, and struck a piece of air conditioning ductwork. The impact was so strong that it created a bump on the ceiling of the first floor but did not penetrate it.
