What does ‘open source AI’ mean, anyway?

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a steward of the Open Source Definition, setting out how the term "open source" can be applied to software2. A license that meets this definition can be considered "open source5." OSI's role is to ensure that the open source software movement's core tenets are upheld, promoting transparency, collaboration, and accessibility in software development.

The OSI's funding from the Sloan Foundation allows it to diversify its financial support and maintain its independence. This grant helps the organization continue its work on advocating for open source AI and developing the Open Source AI Definition without being overly reliant on corporate funding.
