Winamp, the once-popular music player, is planning a comeback but not through open-sourcing its code as some rumors suggested. Instead, under the ownership of Llama Group, it will release a version called FreeLLama, allowing some developer contributions but maintaining corporate control over the software. This initiative aims to evolve Winamp with global developer input while keeping the main versions for Mac, Android, and iOS proprietary. A new version set to launch on July 1 will include features to help artists and labels monetize their music, marking a significant shift from its 1997 origins.
